As John grows up into a seasoned soldier, trained thoroughly by Chief Petty Officer Mendez. Later on, they are ship onto a freighter carrying supplies to rebels along the asteroid belt along one of the human colonies. Four spartans board the freighter, including John himself. It was their first mission and they were somewhat inexperienced compared to what they would be later on. During this mission, John is shot by a bullet and is awarded the purple heart award, a badge of valor. As he continues, he is assigned by the mysterious Office of Naval Intelligence, more known as ONI. His mission this time invlolves the infiltrating of a covenant ship and travel to their home-planet to destroy, or at least lower, the covenant's morale. The spartans have been notoriously known by the covenant for using their own weapons against them. Especially hijacking. It is said in the book that John could hijack a covenant tank within a few seconds. Then this is followed by the events of Halo.
