I think that this story is about another sad story about obsession with money. In this story, gambling is in a clearer form of horse racing and Four Digits. The main character was warned over and over again to change her habit of gambling. She had spent so much time and money on gambling that she had neglected her elderly mother. Her mother was living in a dilapidated attap house. In the end ,her mother was forced to go out and earn money by herself despite her age. And in the end, as the main cahracter, Ah Boh, got more and more engrossed in gambling. Her mother had died in an accident right before her. Yet despite the death of her mother she still insists on gambling and 'promises' her mother that she would prepare a grand funeral and offer a hundred joss sticks a day to her.
