I think that money was important to this couple because they wanted their ream house so much that they were nearly insane, in a mad rush to get the money to but their dream house. However they were impatient by having to slowly raise the money with their salaries so they resorted to the stick market where they could make a windfall within a few hours. The paper was important as it meant whether th sticks which they had bought were making or losing money. In the end when the protagonist had died, his mother got a the paper version of his drem house. In hope of him having an easier life in the under worrld.
